Macarius was an extraordinary character whose life story soon spread, and attracted the attention of many who trekked out to the desert to learn from him. A rather reluctant leader who constantly sought solitude, became the starting point of a monastery in the desert, which still stands 1700 years later and is where this week’s video was filmed.
John Cassian was a man who made an incredible impact on the world. He influenced Pope Gregory I, Ignatius of Loyola, Benedict of Nursia and even Michel Foucault, an atheist philosopher in 20th century France. His teachings are still guiding us in how to grow in holiness and the likeness of Jesus, and his writings did more to spread the spirituality of the Desert Fathers and Mothers than anyone else.
Anthony of the Desert gave up everything to seek God in the Egyptian wilderness, and his radical simplicity, fierce spiritual battles, and deep compassion inspired a movement that shaped Christian monasticism. His life and legacy still speak today through his timeless call to keep God in mind, follow Scripture, and walk the way of Jesus with courage and grace.
