There are two things Jesus told His first disciples to do, which we continue today, Baptism and Eucharist (or Communion). These are often referred to as Sacraments and they are an important part of being part of a local church community and the Body of Christ (what we might also call the universal church).
Our mission is to build a community of disciples (people who follow Jesus), and Matthew's gospel records Jesus' connection between being a disciple and being baptised.
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.Matthew Chapter 28, Verse 19 to 20
Jesus wants those who have trusted him as Saviour and submitted to him as Lord to get baptised. As you can see, baptism publicly identifies someone as a disciple of Jesus.
Who should get baptised? Anyone who has confessed faith in Jesus as their Lord and Saviour should be baptised. For some, this is almost immediately after salvation. For others, it may take some time.
Who should not get baptised? Those who don't believe Jesus has saved them from the eternal punishment of their sin, or who are not yet Christian. Anyone who has already been baptised, even in another church or denomination.
We believe in baptism by full immersion, which means going completely underwater, albeit briefly.
